Jean Prouvé, born April 8, 1901 in Paris (14th arrondissement) 1 and died March 23, 1984 in Nancy, is a French architect and designer, craftsman of metal.

Jean Prouvé is the son of the painter and sculptor Victor Prouvé. In 1916, he was forced to give up his studies due to financial difficulties of the family. He apprenticed to the ironworker Émile Robert in Enghien, then in 1919 at Szabo. His correspondent in Paris is André Fontaine, progressive intellectual who will mark the young Prouvé as the artists of the School of Nancy have marked: never to copy. After his military service, in 1924 he set up a workshop in Nancy, with a loan from Saint-Just Péquart, an intimate member of the family, and from that first year designed his “Reclining Chair” in folded sheet steel, lacquered and canvas2. His first realizations are ironwork for private buildings: Hotel Thiers de Nancy, storefronts in Paris. In 1926, he received his first commission from an architect: the entrance gate of the Villa Reifenberg in Paris by Robert Mallet-Stevens, who asked again in 1928 to realize at Villa Noailles retractable ironwork of the room in open air on the terrace.
